OUR NEW REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT On January 29th the following candidates were elected to serve on the RSU 1 Board of Directors. District 1 - Charles Durfee District 2 - David Barber District 3 - Tim Harkins District 4 - Chet Garrison District 5 - Julie Rice District 6 - Francie Tolan District 7 - Betsy Varian Until the new district takes effect on July 1, the current individual school boards will remain operational for all normal school business pertaining to the school year ending June 30, 2008. HOW REPRESENTATION WILL WORK Each member of our seven-member Regional Board of Directors will represent a district that crosses municipal borders, including a portion of at least two communities. Further, each community will comprise a portion of at least two districts. A map showing these districts is on display at the Superintendent’s offices for Bath (39 Andrews Road, Bath) and School Union 47 (123B State Road, West Bath), the Patten Free Library, and all municipal office buildings. The map will reflect how each division was calculated, based on the abiding principle of “one man, one vote”. MORE INFORMATION For further information, please contact Superintendent of Schools/Election Secretary William Shuttleworth at 443-1113. School Capital Improvement Bond Referendum On June 12, 2007 a $2.9 million school capital improvement bond will be on the referendum for voter approval. These funds are needed in order to take immediate action to make our schools safer, healthier, more accessible, educationally sound, and aesthetically pleasing. All schools will see significant improvements over the next year to their buildings and grounds. Our list of projects by individual schools is available on request from the superintendent’s office and located on our district website at www.bathpublicschools.com. Projects range from fire alarm upgrades and handicapped accessibility in schools to roofs, parking lots, and interior flooring. Our focus, however, has been primarily on safety, energy efficiency, air quality improvement, accessibility to and within our schools and educational space enhancement. The recently completed Fisher-Mitchell School roof project was the start of a more comprehensive capital improvement plan for our district. The schools in this great city were built between 1929 to 1963, with some additions and renovations up to the present. The most recent renovation and addition was completed at Bath Middle School in 2001. Compliance issues related to health, safety, and accessibility are still numerous and our plans are to address as many of these problem areas as possible with this bond. Replacement of our capital investment in school facilities would cost over $60 million, therefore, we need to take care of these important resources. The bond proceeds will have a positive impact on the education and welfare of our children and will assist in keeping our facilities educationally sound for many years to come. Your support for the education of our youth is greatly appreciated and your continued support is needed at the upcoming referendum. Please vote on this important referendum on June 12, 2007. Should you wish additional information on our short-range and long-range capital improvement plans, please contact Bob Young, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, at 443-6601. Please click on the following link to view the Bond Referendum Projects Proposal which was presented to City Council on April 4, 2007.
