SUPERINTENDENT'S
MESSAGE
Dear Folks,
A year ago, I was given
the privilege of coming to Bath Public Schools as your
superintendent. It has been a great year and I thank the staff, the
community and the children for this opportunity.
During this year, LD 910
passed by a 2 to 1 margin. This law will allow Bath and Arrowsic,
Phippsburg, West Bath and Woolwich to form Regional School Unit #1 as a
unified school system. On July 1, 2008, a new 7 member board will take
full responsibility for this new school unit. We are extremely excited
that this new structure will deliver a seamless, forward looking K-12
delivery model, assuring a world class education for all of our
students.
In concert with this
great staff, Bath Public Schools have a lot to celebrate. Let me
address some of the initiatives that we have been focusing our
attention.
-
Literacy: Reading is
the ultimate key to learning. We have established a K-12 committee
to examine best practice in reading instruction and then implement
these strategies to assure that all students leave our school system
able to have the reading skills necessary for success in life as an
adult.
-
Morse is now wireless. Thanks to a gift from the Class of 1957,
Morse High School students and staff have wireless capacity, linking
all computers to the internet world, opening doors of learning in an
instant.
-
Everyday Math: All elementary children will now be instructed with
Everyday Math, a well researched curriculum that has proven to
improve math mastery.
-
Professional Development: Our staff is deeply committed to
continuous improvement. We use ‘late start Wednesdays’ to improve
instruction, best practices to reach all students and improving
student achievement.
-
Facilities Improvement: This community approved a $3 million
referendum to improve the physical condition of our schools. Wow!
Come take a look for yourself. We have put in new floor tiling,
windows, heating units, pavement, and a host of other upgrades. We
have just started. Over the next two years, our schools will have
never looked better.
-
Morse High School: We have a great new principal, new guidance staff
and several new teachers to complement our faculty that wants to be
the best in the state. There is vibrancy in the air, a spirit of
cooperation and several initiatives that will make us Number 1.
-
Our
kids: We have terrific kids. They come to school to do their best,
they get admitted to colleges of their choice and create a climate of
cooperation and goodwill. Hats of to our kids. And, don’t forget our
great football team this year.
-
There are so many other areas, but let me summarize by saying we have
a renewed commitment that all kids count, all kids are part of our
system and we will go whatever distance we need to go to make sure
all kids get what they need from Bath Public Schools.
Please
come and visit with me. If I am in, I want to meet with you. Our
school board has provided great leadership to this community.
Sincerely,
William C.
Shuttleworth
Superintendent
