1. Describe the relationship between healthy practices and personal health (e.g., eating well and exercise). 

Healthy practices as they relate to 4th graders (ex., lice, hygiene, nutrition, exercise).

Invite the school nurse in to discuss the importance of washing hands properly, helping a person who is bleeding (use gloves, hand person tissue or Band-Aid), prevention of lice (do not wear others' coats, hats, do not share combs), getting rid of lice (special shampoos, washing clothes, pillows, bedding).

The school nurse will also lead a review of the Food Pyramid and other healthy practices (lots of water, lots of rest, exercise).

Given several scenarios (ex., a friend cuts self on playground), students will explain how to handle each situation properly.

3. Describe the basic structures and functions of the human body systems.

Body systems (see also Science C4 Cells):

5. Describe ways in which a healthful school and community environment influences personal health.

Topics might include:

  • school cleanliness
  • food preparation
  • positive interactions with peers and adults
  • pollution (air, water)
  • exercise opportunities (walking path, YMCA, sports)

Invite school employees (ex., cafeteria worker, custodian, social worker) to speak on the topic.
