1. Edit their own written work for standard English spelling and usage, as evidenced by pieces that show and contain:

" complete sentences.

" initial understanding of the use of pronouns and adjectives.

" evidence of correct spelling of frequently used words.

" few significant errors in the capitalization of proper nouns and of the words that begin sentences.

" few significant errors in the use of end stop punctuation (e.g., periods, question marks).

 

Students will write correctly using Standard English Conventions according to the length and complexity of a written piece.

Students instructed in the writing process and the Conventions trait of Vicki Spandel.

Practice will be given in identifying parts of speech, nouns, pronouns,adjectives and verbs. They will also be introduced to the purpose of using these parts of speech.

# Students will have practice using the high frequency core word according to Rebecca Sitton.

# Students will also begin to use spelling patterns and word families.

# Students will be shown how to use the "tools" around the room. i.e., Word Wall, charts around the room, Quick Words, Spell Check, etc.

# Students will have practice using capital letters and a variety of punctuation in their writing.

Students will write for a variety of purposes. Pieces will be selected and photocopied. The student will use a red pencil on the photocopy to demonstrate their ability to edit their work for complete sentences and to edit for correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

Examples of a variety of pieces.
-The student can create a bookmark for the book that will use both text and a picture to entice others into reading their book.

Practice will be given in oral presentations by having, sharing to the class about anything, discussions, giving reports, creating video tapes about a topic, an autobiography, or a presentation about their progress in school.

Practice will be given in book conferencing and writing conferencing

Student will adjust their manner of speaking to fit their audience when giving reports, brainstorming, sharing, creating video tapes, etc.
