TEXTS Performance Indicators Essential Elements Suggested Suggested Vocabulary 1. Understand the main idea of simple
expository information. Students will read or listen to
various informational texts and will demonstrate
understanding of the main idea either orally or in
writing. . # Instruction on using a KWL chart,
Retelling, Mapping Drawing to Learn. # Read, view or listen to
informational excerpts from encyclopedias, science, social
studies, math etc. books and/or websites, CD-ROM's,
videos. # Direct instruction about the use and
different format of nonfiction books. Students will learn
note taking and grid making as a means of recording and
sorting material that they learn. Given a informational book the
students will record at least 5 pieces of new information
and will write or give an oral report using all 5 pieces of
information including a beginning and ending

the student will create a timeline of 5 facts of a persons
life. Given science information about a
cycle, the student will draw and label the cycle. KWL
Students will apply reading, listening, and viewing strategies to
