1. Demonstrate that living things are made up of different parts

Know the parts of a certain animal or plants

Students will observe plants, mealworms, lobsters, etc. and draw and label their observations of the various parts.

Resources-Grade 2 Science, McGraw-Hill: Water and Plants Chapters 1, 2; Rocky Homes Chapters 9, 10

Students will be able to explain (write / discuss / illustrate) the function of plant parts.

2. Demonstrate an understanding that plants and animals need food, water, and gases to survive.

Know the basic needs for life

Students will conduct experiments with plants to determine if plants need food, water, light and gases to survive.

Students will describe (write / discuss / illustrate) their observations and what happens to a plant if these resources (plants need food, water, light and gases to survive) are not available.

Also see 2A-3 (Students will be able to pictorially represent a life cycle.)

3. Explore magnifying devices and how they allow one to see in more detail.

Understand how to use a magnifying device

Students will use a microscope / lens to observe parts of an organism (ex: plants, mealworms, lobsters)

Students demonstrate basic ability to use a microscope and/ or lens.

4. Provide examples of causes of diseases.
