Activities (Relating to
Assessments) Assessments Vocabulary 2. Describe how soils are formed and why soils differ
from one place to another. Procedural In-Depth Constructed Response Students will complete the Performance Assessment task
called "Take Me Out to the Ball Field" from the Maryland
Assessment Consortium (See pages 434-439 in science
text) . The Earth axis evidence products from earth's crust seasons soil formation tilt 3. Explain the evidence scientists use when they give the
age of the earth. Declarative Basic Constructed Response Students will research how scientists determine the age
of the earth. They will record their findings in a brief
paragraph in science journals. . 5. Classify and identify rocks and minerals based on
their physical and chemical properties, their composition,
and the processes which formed them. Procedural In-Depth Constructed Response Students will classify and identify rocks and minerals
using the chart on page 419 in text and "Characteristics of
Rocks and Minerals" reference sheet, p. 72 from Science Made
Simple, Gr. 5 (Frank Schaffer) Students will discuss their completed charts. 6. Describe the many products used by humans that are
derived from materials in the earth's crust. Declarative Basic Constructed Response Students will brainstorm a list of products derived from
materials in the earth's crust. They will create a collage
