Classroom Assessments
Vocabulary

1. Describe, model, and classify 2D shapes and selected 3D figures.

Identify:

  • square
  • circle
  • rectangle
  • triangle
  • cube
  • cone
  • cylinder

Students will create designs and objects. Then they will describe what the number of shapes and kinds of shapes that are needed to create their design or object .

An extension would be for the student to tell what other shapes could be used to create the same design or object.

Using Cuisenaire Rods, Pattern Blocks, etc.,students will create an animal and/or letter from the alphabet using different shapes. They will then trace the shapes of the animal and/or letter. Next they will describe by naming and telling the number (Amount) of each shape used to create the animal and/or letter.

2. Investigate and predict the results of combining, dividing, and changing 2D shapes.

Identify

  • Patterns
  • Whole
  • Parts
  • Combinations
  • Divide

Changeable shapes

Students will be given practice using Pattern Blocks,
Tangrams,Geoboards, etc. to create complex shapes and then divide these shapes into parts. Using the same number and kind of shapes they will be able to transform the design to a different design.

They will also look for symmetry and patterns.

Students will create designs and objects. Then they will describe what the number of shapes and kinds of shapes that are needed to create their design or object .

An extension would be for the student to tell what other shapes could be used to create the same design or object.

Next they will describe by naming and telling the number (Amount) of each shape used to create the animal and/or letter.

An extension would be to use the same shapes that they used to create their original design and create something else.
Another extension would be to use a different set of materials to create their original design.
