Content Standard: Civics and Government
A. Rights, Responsibilities, and Participation
Students will understand the rights and responsibilities of civic
life and will employ the skills of effective civic
participation.
Common Assessment(s): Individual Rights (LAD) (see also Civics and Government C)
Students will be able to: 1. Identify important individual
rights (e.g., freedom of religion, speech, ownership of
property). U. S. Constitution: Students will be introduced to and
will discuss the Bill of Rights. Resources: Teaching Kids to
Care and Cooperate (Scholastic); Norman Rockwell's Four
Freedoms. Students will make posters to show
their understanding of three of their individual
rights. Bill of Rights 2. Explain why certain
responsibilities of democratic society are
important. Responsibilities of a U.S.
citizen: Students will discuss their
responsibilities at the beginning and throughout the
year. Students will express their
understanding of what it means to be a good citizen in our
school in a discussion, posters, paragraphs, etc. obeying laws 3. Identify the functions of
government of school, locally, and at the state
level. School: City of Bath: The students will explore several
departments of Bath government (fire, police, water
treatment, streets and roads, cemeteries, parks, schools,
recreation, etc.) The students will participate in
creating a project showing the functions of local government
(poster, pamphlet, web, skit, etc.). school govt.

Students will watch a video about the Bill of Rights.
Students will develop a classroom Bill of Rights.
Students will hold a mock election (cartoon characters,
fictional characters, etc.), particularly in an election
year.
