2. Explain how the economy of Maine affects families and communities.

Effects would include

  • prosperity
  • economic hardship
  • job availability
  • changes in population density

The students will discuss strikes, layoffs, and business closings (using newspaper articles as appropriate) and how these affect people's lives.

Use newspaper articles about layoffs, etc., to stimulate classroom discussion.

The students will pretend that BIW closes and will explain how they think it would affect Bath and the families who live here.
