1. Identify similarities and differences in the characteristics of individuals who have made significant contributions to society in different eras.

Qualities of individuals could include

  • honesty
  • integrity
  • perseverance
  • curiosity
  • spirit of adventure

Fourth graders will focus on significant people from Maine: political figures, inventors, sports figures, etc.

Students will use the State of Maine web site to learn about significant Mainers.
Students will write and share reports on significant Mainers.
Teacher will maintain a famous Mainers display or bulletin board or will introduce the Mainer of the Month.

Given a list of character traits, students will match each trait  to a list of significant individuals and explain why the match fits.

2. Place in chronological order, significant events, groups, and people in the history of Maine.

Significant events should include exploration, Popham Colony, and Statehood.

Significant groups should include Native Americans and immigrant groups such as French Canadians.

Students will make a time line which includes significant events, groups, and people.

Given a list of dates and events, students will construct an accurate time line.
