While reading an historical novel about Maine (Sign of the Beaver, On the Way North), students will discuss or chart changes occurring (settlement, forced migration of groups- animals and humans, etc.) and compare them to changes taking place today. (different patterns of settlement, attempts to protect animals and respect and repay Native Americans, etc.)

Students will select one category (settlement, etc.) already discussed in the activity and draw then and now pictures which illustrate the changes occurring. They will write a paragraph explaining the similarities and differences illustrated.
