Early Childhood Occupations

3 CREDITS PER CLASS
The Early Childhood Occupations programs emphasize learning about the five areas of development (social, emotional, moral, physical and intellectual) along with how to create and teach developmentally appropriate curriculum.  Students will also do a field site assignment at one of the carious daycare/preschool facilities in the area.  This class may be taken as a one year or two year program.

 Who can take the Early Childhood Occupations Program?

Students considering enrolling in this program must:

  • Attend one of the following high schools: Boothbay Region High School, Lincoln Academy, Morse, or Wiscasset

  • Have a genuine interest in the care of children

What skills do I need to succeed in this program?

  • Have a positive attitude

  • Are willing to work hard

  • Have good attendance

  • Are able to listen and follow directions

  • Are able to separate personal life from work

  • Are patient and understanding

  • Are able to interact with young children and parents

Early Childhood Occupations has two programs:

A.M. (1st year) and P.M. (2nd year)

Preschool runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  We teach age appropriate material that will encourage and foster the learning processes needed to be successful in kindergarten.  We use themed based lesson plans to enhance students learning.

Infants & Toddlers (AM)(3 Credits)

Three days a week a play group for 3 year olds will teach skills to students interested in caring for very young children.

Pre-School/Special Education (PM)(3 Credits)

Three days a week the p.m. nursery school program provides training for students who are interested in caring for children ages 3-5.

What will I learn in this course?

In Early Childhood Occupations you will:

  • Learn the developmental levels of ages 2.5 to 5

  • Prepare lesson plans for preschool-(circle, snack, lesson plans, closer)

  • Supervise and implement lessons in art, science, music, language arts, games, and math

  • Construct bulleting boards

  • Learn to identify the needs children.

  • Explore career opportunities.
