Mrs. Frey

Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to second grade! During September and October my focus will be on building a classroom community system of learners. My goal is to create a classroom that promotes respect, safety, risk taking, decision making, problem solving and cooperation. As the children experiment and learn together they will develop and acquire valuable learning experiences.

We are beginning to develop a foundation of Vicki Spandel's six writing traits. These traits involve ideas, voice, word choice, organization, fluency and conventions. The first analytical trait is ideas. Children discover it is important to choose an idea or topic they know much about. Knowing much about the topic enables the writer's message to be clear, as well as the audience to learn something they may not have known.

In Rebecca Sitton's spelling program we will review the first fifteen most frequently used words in our English language.

In our new math program, we will explore numbers. We are counting numbers, writing numbers, connecting numbers to money and time, as well as developing our problem solving skills. We will also practicing math facts to 10 and later to 20 to strengthen our speed and accuracy.
