Writing develops in a progression from scribbling on a page to making a definite statement with recognizable print....and the whole gamut in between. Below are some samples from my Kindergarten class, made around January, which illustrate some of the progressions. We have been working on "drawing with details" to tell a story.

Here, there are only drawing details--including chairs and a table--and the story was about a birthday party. You can even see the candles on the cake!

Losing power story

This story was about a power outage and how the family used flashlights. The child is starting to hear most sounds in words and is able to put them down on paper in a left to right progression.

This story is about playing in the snow. The child has written a complete idea with several known words written correctly. The written sentence has more detail than the actual drawing and the child understands the importance of print.
