Everyday Math Vocabulary: In and Out Boxes or Function Machine
Imagine a machine with a funnel at the top and a tube coming out the bottom. The machine can be programmed so that if a number is dropped into the funnel, the machine does something to the number, and a new number comes out the tube. For example, the machine could be programmed to add 10 to any number that is dropped in. If you put in 10, out would come 20. If you put in 6, out would come 16. In these types of problems some of the information is missing. The students have to find the missing information. This method is designed to help students practice facts in a problem solving format.
