Art Overview

Understanding art in relationship to history and culture is an important part of the art curriculum. Special projects are often integrated with units the students are studying in other subjects. Art can provide a powerful means to enhance other instructional activities

In 40 min. sessions once a week, the basic art lesson format is the same for all grades:

The children ENTER, SETTLE, and FOCUS.

They LEARN ABOUT ART using a developmental approach which is cumulative and sequential, often building on skills they have mastered.

They MAKE ART using different media.

They CLEAN UP, and REFLECT on their art communicating thoughts and feelings.

They EXIT with their classroom teacher.

FINISHED WORK is often hung for display on bulletin boards and throughout the halls.

A Creative Thinking is stressed in every lesson. Skills such as being curious, seeking challenges, using imagination, demonstrating fluency, flexibility, and originality support and promotes the children's ability to problem solve and learn in all areas. Enhancing their sense of self-esteem is often a bi-product of success in art.

Special needs students are included regardless of their levels of ability. These children attend with an Ed. Tech., or we alter, adapt, or adjust to fit their needs so that they can enjoy the lesson with their peers.
