World Language - French

Marie James

BONJOUR! Bath is already in its fifth year of elementary world language studies. Learning about other cultures and their language is so important in preparing our students for the future.

This year, children in grade 3 and 5 are continuing their study of French. The older students are currently performing cafe skits using French menus they created and speaking their lines en francais. Whether they are customers or the owners of the cafe, it's a "real life" scenario! Third graders have learned words they would find in a school, and show me they understand by playing a visual form of bingo with this vocabulary. They are also beginning to do math problems in their head en francais!

You can support your child's learning by searching for books/tapes/games at the Dike Newell and Patten Free libraries, looking at maps and atlases, or finding newspaper articles from a French-speaking country. Many of you studied a language in your past--share a word you remember!

Bonjour - Hello

Au revoir - Goodbye

Merci - Thank you

S'il vous plait - Please
