About Your Library

Dike-Newell Library provides a time and place for children to explore the kinds of reading that they enjoy.

Students come once a week with their classes to exchange materials and to have a library lesson. We learn about how libraries are organized and how to locate books, tapes and information. We practice research skills. Computers are an integral part of the library program. Our children check out their own books on the electronic circulation system as well as learn search strategies on the catalog and online encyclopedia. We also focus on literature appreciation with a variety of storytelling, booktalking and art activities.

Children take out one or two books a week during class time and are welcome to visit the library at any open period during the day. Children are learning to be responsible for the books they borrow and so we have a rule that a student may not take home a new book if an old one is overdue.

The Dike-Newell Library hopes that students, teachers and families feel welcome and stimulated in their school library.
