An Interview with Angela Smith about a car accident on Route 1

by Kaitlyn Smith

When did you get into your car accident?

"On Friday, September 29t at around 1:15 PM.

Why were you using a taxi?

"Because I was coming home from my volunteer work at the American Red Cross in Topsham."

How did the accident occur?

"We were driving along the highway; it was a rainy day, and we were talking, when all of a sudden the driver hit a slippery spot and the taxi began to "hydroplane". The taxi began to spin and it spun three times. The driver tried to get control of the vehicle but could not. He then hit the shoulder and the taxi flipped. It was then that my seatbelt broke and I landed shoulders first on the roof of the taxi. It then flipped again and I slammed into the door. The taxi then flipped for the final time where I then landed flat on my back on the roof of the taxi. I could not move. It took four firemen/EMT's to get me out. I was then taken to Mid Coast Hospital."

Did you break anything? If so, what?

"Yes. I broke/fractured three vertebrae and compressed6 more vertebrae. I also have tissue damage surrounding my vertebrae and my ribs."

Why did the taxi hydroplane?

"Because the back tires of the taxi were bald. It had nothing to do with the driver, only the maintenance of the vehicle."
