First Graders
have contributed to the improvement of their school this year through
the use of the KidsNet grant money by planting and maintaining a
garden in front of the school.
Before
planting the garden, the students had professional landscapers talk
to them about the site choice, plant selection and necessary soil and
site preparation.
The students
visited a local greenhouse to learn more about potential plantings
and to plant some seeds in a starter bed for later planting
outside.
Many plant
and flower activities were incorporated in the Science, Math,
Writing, and Reading Curricula:
- We measured our
site.
- We talked about
plant sizes for order and organization of the garden.
- We wrote stories
about planting a garden.
- We did sequencing
of the life of a plant.
- We read fiction
and non-fiction books about plants and flowers.
- We studied the
parts of seeds and plants.
- We planted seeds
and plants.
- We cared for our
garden.
Our garden is
beautiful. Some flowers will blossom in the spring, some in the
summer and some in the fall. Our school looks prettier since we
planted the flowers. Everyone has been very respectful of our
garden.
