If you continue scrolling down the page you will see the process and product of research completed by second grade students. Further down the page are links to a first grade adaptation and a third grade adaptation. The organizer and scoring rubric are also on this page and can be downloaded.

The following e-mail created an authentic prompt for starting research which is required by the Maine Learning Results.

Lighthouses

We had a request from a second grade in Idaho.

Hi Rosemarie!

You are a great communicator (e-mail too) and I bet your class will hear from a lot of other classes. My class of second graders is interested in Maine because it is easier to find than some states. Are there still lighthouses there?

Congratulations on your grandson! I have one too though he is in California and I am in Idaho.

P.S. It would be neat if we all had the entire journal of Owney's travels.

We responded to this request by doing a research project and then e-mailing our information.

Dear Mrs. Paul,

You can look up Lighthouses in Maine's Kids Page on the Internet, in the encyclopedia and in the Library.

We found a book called Maine Lighthouses: A Pictorial Guide, that tells about Maine Lighthouses. The book was written by Courtney Thompson.

There are sixty seven Lighthouses in Maine.

You can look up Lighthouses in Maine's Kid's Page

This is how we got started. Students thought about what they were asked to do for the children in Idaho. Then they fill out their organizer. Keep scrolling down the page to see their work.
Click on the text version for the explanation on how the children complete this form.

This is a sample of student's work using a page that had a vertical format. I have since made the format horizontal to allow more space for young children to write.

The English Language Arts Entry slip (1999) for the Maine Assessment Portfolio Project.

A student's response slip.

The rest of the class enjoyed the research so much that they proceeded to research apples, pizza, cooking candy, etc.

The students work in groups and collaborate.

A good starting point for web research is < http://www.yahooligans.com>.

A first grade teacher, Donna Smith received a SEED Award to adapt this project. Click here to see her adaptations.

Click here to view third grade teacher, Amanda Russell's adaptation of this project.

Click here to view Adaptations of the BIG6tm made by Tricia Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher teaches second grade in Bowdoinham, Maine.

An even safer research area can be created by the teacher making a web page with links like the example below which is <http://www.col.k12.me.us/fms/grade2/finalscaveger/scavengerbathbox.html>. The students can still use the Big 6 to organize their thoughts and their report.
