The world language program is in its second year in the Bath elementary schools. We believe that in order for each student to meet the demands of the future in a global economy, the study of a second language is a window of opportunity that is best begun in the elementary years. We also believe communication and cultural understanding is the core to second language study and that this will prepare our students for the future.
This year, 2001-2002, children in grade 2 are beginning their study of French. They have learned their first song, can tell the colors of their clothes, are doing short conversations with partners, and count everything! Students in grade 4 are adding to their knowledge from last year. A new unit taught them house vocabulary, and then they shared how many rooms/bedrooms, etc. they have they live. They are currently creating calendars in French for "octobre". Both grades will continue with French until they graduate from Fisher-Mitchell.
Students are eager to learn, whether they are new to the language, or are showing me how much they have remembered from third grade. I hear many "bonjours" throughout the halls of the school! If you have any questions about your child's French program, please contact me and I will get back to you promptly.
Our school will be
adding information about Bath, Maine and Fisher Mitchell School on
this French based web site. Think of some information we could share
with them and tell your teacher or Mrs. Smith. Check it out
