He planted apple seeds.

Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman.

He was called Johnny Appleseed because he planted apple seeds.

Teacher and parent note:

This month we read stories about Johnny Appleseed. The students decided that they'd like to celebrate his birthday by baking an apple pie. Actually, we baked two pies. We peeled and cut up apples and, like Grandma, we didn't measure! We just made sure the apples were piled high and had plenty of sugar and spices! They were REALLY delicious!

The students selected the pie photo that they liked the best to put on the page. Then they selected the font color and size. In a whole group they told things that they had learned about John Chapman, and I wrote them down as they were dictated.
