In their school experience before third grade, students have learned to read. When they reach third grade they will begin the process of reading to learn.
Reading: Students will use the skills and strategies of the reading process to comprehend, interpret, evaluate and appreciate what they have read.
Informational Texts: Students will apply reading, listening, and viewing strategies to informational texts across all areas of curriculum.
The Writing Process: We use Vicky Spandell's Six Traits of Writing to teach and evaluate student writing.

Writing is a Process. We teach students the steps in the process. We learn that we can take our good ideas and develop them using rich, detailed language. Our own voice should shine through and let the reader see our personality. Writing is like talking. As we do in reading, we are now writing in every subject area, for a variety of reasons and on a variety of topics.
The steps of the writing process.
1. Pre-writing: Plan your ideas
2. Drafting: Write your Rough Draft
3. Revise and Edit: Re-read your writing and make sure your message is clear and detailed, in correct, sensible order with rich, varied language.
4. Proofread: Check your writing for correctness
5. Publish: Share your final copy with someone
The Federal Government has identified five reading skills that students need to learn.

4. Vocabulary
5. Comprehension
