Ferdinand Sets Sail Ferdinand Magellan was born in Spain in 1480. He died in 1521 in the Phillipines. He was a believer, brave,clever,noble,commanding he had a lot of courage.When he died what was left of of crew took over.Magellan was the most outstanding explorer of all time.  Magellan sailed around the world The reason for this is that he attempted to sail around the world. Magellan was in the military for a while. He believed that he could get to the rich spice islands by sailing west of the Spanish settlements in the New World. |
The Crew Suffers While Magellan and his crew were sailing around the world they suffered from many things, There was a shortage of fresh food and some people died of starvation and other diseases. There was not enough water and it became contaminated. They ate rats and ox hides and sawdust to avoid starvation. They ate spoiled cheese and meat. They drank foul smelling water. They also ate maggots. It was not very clean on the ships. The smells were very bad. There was no way to take a bath. They encountered people who did not like them in the Philippines. Magellan was killed by the natives in a battle there. his crew with one ship left finished the voyage without him. |
