Takes its First Steps...

(continued)

On hand for the opening ceremonies were Senator Paula Benoit, Representative Thom Watson, David Connerty-Marin (Director of Communications for Education Commissioner Susan Gendron), television and newspaper reporters, along with dozens of interested and supportive members of the newly created school community.

Maine DOE Director of Communications David Connerty-Marin reads proclamation from Commissioner Susan Gendron to the audience as Superintendent William Shuttleworth and Board Members Chet Garrison and David Barber look on.

Seven new board members were sworn in: Julie Rice, Francie Tolan, Chet Garrison, Charles Durfee, Tim Harkins, David Barber, and Betsy Varian. After electing Durfee of Woolwich chair and Julie Rice of Bath co-chair, the Board drew envelopes at random from Superintendent William Shuttleworth to determine the length of their terms of office. Rice and Garrison drew the "short straws," serving one-year terms. Tolan and Durfee will serve 2-year terms, with Harkins, Barber, and Varian drawing the 3-year slots.

The Board agreed to meet next on Monday, February 11, at 5:30 in the Morse High School library. Agenda items will include selection process for a new superintendent, along with setting up committees and timetables for budget work and bylaws.

New Board Members Julie Rice of Bath and Francie Tolan of Arrowsic take the oath of office.
